Reaching Out

I shared this post on my Facebook and Twitter pages and certainly wanted to share here as well.

A good reminder to reach-out to your parents, grandparents, and elderly neighbors, especially those living alone.

This story is heart-breaking.

Sadly I have a blogger buddy who is one step away from being in that position and I worry what would happen if she stopped blogging. We do need to reach out. We might be in that same position one day.

My sister-in-law wants to move from Michigan to Florida once my brother retires (he's 70), to get away from the harsh winters and enjoy their senior years in the sunshine. My brother fears what will happen when one of them passes away and the other is left there alone, hundreds of miles from their family. It's a situation so many people face.

It's sad to think that you could live somewhere for 50 years and not know your neighbors. Glad she reached out for a friend. We all need friends, even if it is just a quick chat now and then.

My grandfather is 99, living alone, and I get this story on a very personal level. As a family, we have rallied around him to try and make sure he doesn't end up so alone, but how many people are out there without that kind of support? I can only imagine.
