A Slice of Heaven: Aliens, Superheroes and Sharks

It's not often that I go to the movie theater.  It's even less likely that I see two movies in a row that I absolutely adore but I did.  In the last two weeks, I watched Captain America (in 3D) and then Cowboys and Aliens.  I loved them both.  LOVED!! Both were larger than life films with lots of action and likable characters.  And Daniel Craig and Chris Evans as leading characters? That didn't hurt the screen either.  Hollywood?  More, please.

Then, on the other side of the movie spectrum, as if life couldn't be any more perfect, it was Shark Night on the SyFy channel.  Yes, Shark Night!  All Saturday night long, SyFy played some of the cheesiest movies you've ever seen in your life.  Giant crocodiles and sharks? They had them! Teenagers with raging hormones and gorgeous women who looked no older than 22 years old with doctorates and medical degrees kicking shark booty?! SyFy had 'em.  Some of the worst CGI you'll ever see?  SyFy had it covered.  Watching the Saturday night SyFy movies is like watching the old Japanese Godzilla monster flicks but in color.  The only thing missing were subtitles or bad voiceovers.  Don't ask me why, but I love the cheesiness that is SyFy.  It's like television comfort food.  I'm not sure if those of you outside the US can get the SyFy channel, but if you can Hulu it, treat yourself to a Saturday night movie or two.  They're hilarious.

How about you? Watch any good movies this weekend?

P.S. I am a guest today at Chick Lit is the New Black Blog! Come meet Amanda.  And learn which rock n' roll celebrity asked me to dance once. :)

Didn't get to watch anything this weekend but I'm with you on SyFy. A couple weekends ago my grandson and I sat through a three movie marathon - giant crocs, sharks, and snakes. Probably the same ones you saw. So bad you had to love 'em.

I've heard some great things about Captain America - I really want to see it!

This has been a movie-going summer for me as well, but not for new releases. Where we live, there are a number of dollar theaters that are really nice and show films "past their prime." Cowboys and Aliens looks good, can't wait to see it when it gets to my local dollar theater!

I am far on the other side of the spectrum. I watched A Place in the Sun, with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift - it won 8 oscars back in the 1950's - I'd never seen it. Very powerful. I really want to see Cowboys and Aliens, though.

I was disappointed in Captain America. Cowboys and Aliens was pretty well done though. That was the last movie I've seen.

There are so many movies that I want to see. I can't complain though because we are having great family time doing summery outdoory naturey things.

I have to catch up on my Marvel films though before next May and The Avengers movie comes out!

Glad you LOVED C&A since you had waited so long to see it!

I really want to see Captain America! I hardly ever get out to the movies, but I've heard so many good things about that one.

I saw The Help over the weekend, and it was brilliant. The best ensemble acting I've ever witnessed, and the story was well-told and multi-layered.

I'm visiting from the Campaign, and I look forward to visiting again.

Glad you enjoyed both Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens! SyFy does make some crappy movies, don't they? It's fun to review and poke fun at them though.

LOL! Oh, man. Isn't SyFy the one who's doing the whole Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson movies? sounds hilariously awful.

I finally watched The King's Speech this weekend, and loved it! :o) <3

I want to see Captain America, but not Cowboys & Aliens. For some reason, that show's trailer really turns me off. But you know, that's just me. I'm glad you enjoyed your movies. ;)

The guy that played Captain America was so smokin' hot it's not even funny.

And James Bond is...well...yeah.

Stopping in from the platform building campaign to say hi.

Oh and I'm perfectly okay saying the above comments because I'm gay (in case you were wondering) so I totally go see movies like that for the man candy.

I haven't seen Captain America or Cowboys and Aliens yet. But SyFy is brilliant for bad movies that end up as good comedy fodder.

I love SyFy movies!! I DVRed Doomsday Prophecy and watched it a couple of times, reveling in the cheesiness that is the Saturday Night SyFy movie experience=)
I'm glad to hear the Cowboys and Aliens turned out good! I wanted to watch it since the first preview. And as long as Captain America is better than Thor (which I still liked for the action scenes) then it is definitely a must see=)

I was weary of those two. Glad to know they were good! <3 from a fellow campaigner and new follower

Now they are two movies that are on my 'to watch' list. We get SyFy in England but I think we have a different schedule. Too bad, sharks might be fun :)

Hi from a fellow campaigner :)

We're having a little discussion in the house about Cowboys and Aliens. I don't have anything against it per say... just that the last 3, 4, 5??? movies we have been to have been action alien or monster movies. I want a touchy feely chick flick. Something romantic and epic this time. But i might have to give it was that good... damn it, Liz! :)

Yeah, I've heard really good things about Cowboys vs. Aliens. Maybe one of these days when it comes out on video, I'll see it.
