Google Plus: The New Facebook?

Look out Facebook.  There's another sheriff social media player in town: Google+.  Perhaps you've heard of it?

I've only recently begun to investigate Google+ and here's what I know which, admittedly, isn't much. Yet:

1) It is similar to Facebook in that you connect with family and friends and friends of friends by creating Circles.
2) A user is able to share posts, videos, and pictures.
3) There are more privacy controls (for now).
4) The name Google+ sounds like a name for a household cleaner.  (Seriously, Google Guys, isn't there a name that's more appealing and creative than Google+ for your new baby?!)
5) Saying, "I facebooked him" has become commonplace.  I can't imagine saying "I googleplussed him" just yet.

Like with Tumblr, I'm dipping my toe into Google+ with reservation.  I have not yet created a profile page and unsure whether I will.  Unless people become really angry and frustrated with Facebook, I'm not certain people will be flocking to Google+ in droves either.  But there's always that possibility, especially the more Facebook's privacy controls turn into a Sudoku puzzle.

Facebook still is a little flashier than Google+ and has more features like the recent Skyping capability, which is kind of cool.  Although one of the things I like about Facebook is that I can chat with friends in my pajamas and not worry that I haven't combed my hair.

How about you?  Are you a Google+ user yet?

Oy! Having so much trouble with FB and Blogger right now that I can't imagine taking on another new social media thing. (Took me about 4 tries to comment here, for example.) But since FB is really driving me crazy....maybe. I'll let you tell me about all the kinks first!

Oh yes I have heard of this. I don't FB and I'm not planning to Google plus. I haven't even done my vacuuming yet and I've been busy all day... :O)

I've never heard of Google+ but then again, I'm always the last to know when it comes to this social media stuff. I don't see myself joining it. I can barely keep up with blogger/facebook/twitter.

poor copycat google, you'd think they couldve com up w/a better name. how bout foogle or conoogle?

I have enough trouble keeping up with Facebook and blogging, there's no way I can do one another thing. I let go of Twitter after a few months, so I don't think I'll try this.

I've looked at it, too, but haven't created a profile. I agree with everyone else, that I can barely keep up with all my other social media. I don't think I need another one :)

I've had several invites already, but unless Google+ is giving away pony rides, I think I'll pass.

I don't need any more distractions. I've got books to write.

Ha! I agree about the name. I hated the name Facebook but now I don't even notice it. Google+ sounds dumb. I think CookiePuss.
At this time I will not be joining, not that I've been invited. I'll wait to see what 'the masses' end up doing.

I have yet to sort out my feelings on Google+. I guess I'll just have to try it myself!

I've heard of this but haven't given it a try yet. I hesitate to add another social media outlet, since I'm a bit addicted already. But I agree with you on the name. Really?

Not sure. I don't do FB, just Twitter and blogging, and they take up a significant chunk of time. I think I'm going to wait and see how Google+ catches on before I decide between it and FB, but right now I'd probably lean toward Google+ after some articles I've read about it.

I love that you keep up with this stuff so I don't have to. :) I think for anything to knock Facebook out, it's going to have to be completely different, not the same thing slightly reimagined, you know?

I tried to sign up and they said they were at their limit! I am going to because I don't facebook but I thought as I looked over the features that google+ that it looked more interesting. We'll see. Blogger hasn't been of much interest so perhaps google+ can get some vibes going...

No. I don't think I can handle another social network. Unless it catches on big, I'll refrain. I don't use FB that much either. I prefer Twitter.

They can barely keep Blogger running. Should they really be taking something else on? Seems there's always some glitch lately.

I've read about Google+, but not tried it. Not sure if I want to get another social-media account. I should rather close down some the ones I already have. It takes too much time. I've found that I want to prioritize my blog (since that's where I do the writing that I enjoy), and cut down on the useless shit-chat stuff like Facebook.

I joined Google+ https://plus.google.com/100071314542033042636/posts
What can I say? I was curious. I'm still learning my way around, but on first bite, much easier to navigate than Facebook and I like that you can follow topics in there, too--not just people. I just hope they end by wrapping in Google Reader. Will make my life much simpler.

I'll wait until everyone else is there and then I'll finally join up. I already have way too many social media sites and blogs I have to keep up with, I need another like I need a hole in my head!

You are on the cutting edge of internet technology, Liz! First tumblr and now google+...your blog is the first place I learn about these newfangled sites (I sound like I'm 80 years old, LOL). What will these young whippersnappers come up with next? ;D I'll stick with facebook for now.

Been holding back on jumping into Google+ just yet... biggest concern is the overloading of too many social locations... so going to wait and see how it pans out.

No I didn't even know that there was a google plus. I didn't know FB had skping capabilities. I need someone to tutor me in all the programs out there, I think. I do know that since FB changed a few things it's not as good as before in some areas (private groups).

I am! I did it to check it out and so far so good. I don't like FB much so I'd be happy to move to a different platform.

I just got on Google+ today and it is interesting, but like you, I don't know how much time I'll invest until it's really proven. We'll see.

Jenny Woolf said...

Not sure I will be. I'm getting tired of FB and don't want to get involved in yet another social networking site.

I set up a profile page and have done a little, just to see. I don't see that it offers anything new. Altho it is fun to drag faces into circles, I like that part.

I'm just a sucker for anything Google :-) Gave you an award, by the way!

I've been listening to the folks at Twit.tv talk about Google Plus non-stop for weeks....
I think it's fascinating, but probably won't bother signing up.

I'm so glad you brought this up, Liz. I've been sitting here worrying how to do Google+ as well as have a quality FB, Twitter and blog presence. It's refreshing to know the consensus is it's OK not to rush out and embrace everything new thing but do what you decide to do well.

I'm delighted to be a new follower.

Michelle

P.S. I've left a comment for you on Joy's blog.
